Small Grants

The Legal Foundation of Washington’s Small Grant Program makes available one-time grants of up to $3,500 to programs that provide civil legal aid to low-income people in Washington State.

Small Grants are available to support unanticipated, one-time projects or purchases that are critical to an organization’s ability to meet the legal needs of the poor. Eligible projects include replacement of defunct office equipment, an unforeseen need to relocate or a proposal to meet urgent, time-sensitive client needs.

Small Grant applications may be made to the Foundation at any time. However, because funds are limited it is best to apply early in the calendar year as funds may be depleted before year end.

To Apply for a Small Grant

Submit a letter of application to the Foundation’s Grants Manager, not to exceed three pages, that provides the following information:

    • A brief description of the applicant organization.
    • The purpose and nature of the proposed project to be funded, including the time frame for accomplishment of the project.
    • The benefits to be derived from the project.
    • A brief explanation of why this project does not fit in the applicant's annual budget.

Attach to the letter of application:

    • A list of board members.
    • A budget detailing the costs of the proposed project or purchase.
    • If funds are sought for equipment, include a copy of the estimate for the desired equipment.

Small Grant applicants will be notified in writing of the Foundation's decision.
