Frequently Asked Questions

Who should apply for a grant from the Legal Foundation?
The Foundation generally gives priority to programs that already receive grant funds from the Foundation. However, the Trustees encourage applications from other programs engaged in the provision of civil legal aid if the need, client population, or geographic area that it serves is not addressed by existing programs.

Who makes grant decisions and when are they made?
The Foundation’s nine-member Board of Trustees makes Annual Grant decisions in November of each year. Applicants are generally advised of grant decisions by December 1.

Small Grant and Access Fund decisions are made throughout the calendar year by the chairperson of the Foundation’s Grant Committee.

Who should I talk to about making a grant application?
If you are interested in submitting a grant application but are not currently the recipient of an Annual Grant, please contact the Foundation’s Grants Manager by telephone (206) 624-2536 x 289 or by e-mail.

When is the deadline for making a grant application?
Annual Grant applications for 2009 funding will be due August 29, 2008. Applications for Small and Access Fund grants are accepted throughout the year.
